UV lamps are used in terrariums, and are a necessity for anyone raising reptiles.
Without proper lighting, turtles get sick and will die. Other reptiles require broad spectrum light also, however research we have examined appears inconclusive.
Natural, unfiltered light (glass will filter UVB light) is best for reptiles, however artificial light with UVB will also help. For aquatic turtles, most experts recommend using a 2.5 percent or 5 percent UVB lamp. Our Halogen basking lamps claim an output of 3% UVB.
If you are unsure of what your reptiles need, there are plenty of great resourses on the internet. For turtles, I like this one: http://www.myturtlecam.com/lighting.php
Please note that we no linger stock halogen bulbs. Basically, we found them to be either unreliable, or in the case of one expensive, well known brand, had no measurable UV output whatsoever!
